About

My three year old daughter was diagnosed with Pre B Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia on 06/11/2014. This blog is to chronicle our family’s journey through childhood cancer.

Ember’s Story:
Ember is a sweet, outgoing three year old girl who lives with her parents, Amanda and James, and little brother, Lucien, in Houston, TX. She is an active child that loves to play school, monster, and games that involve dressing princesses or babies on her tablet.
Over the past few months, Ember began having repeat illnesses. When she began to complain of knee pain and her lymph nodes began to swell, both parents became concerned and took her to the doctor. After several tense days of waiting for test results to return, on June 11, 2014, Ember was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL).

What is Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL):

ALL is a cancer that starts from white blood cells called lymphocytes in the bone marrow.
In a healthy child, the bone marrow makes blood stem cells (immature cells) that become mature blood cells over time.
In Ember, and other children with ALL, too many stem cells become lymphoblasts, B lymphocytes, or T lymphocytes. These cells are cancer (leukemia) cells. The leukemia cells are not able to fight infection and leave less room for healthy white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets.
